PlanetSide Players

Originally called “My PlanetSide”, PlanetSide Players was our first foray into bringing data from in-game to the web.

PlanetSide Players had

• Character Profiles
• Outfit (Clan) Rosters
• Dynamic Territory control maps

The maps were my favorite part, as I could check the action each morning by going to the Flash-based map and see which of the three factions, New Conglomerate, Terran Republic or Vanu Sovereignty, had dominated the night before.

The map could replay a timeline of shifting influence, coloring each territory, command center and tower according to who held claim to it. Select the 48 hour option, press play and watch as the map turns blue with the New Conglomerate’s midnight offensive. Each day the system declared a daily winner according to which faction held the most territory. It was even used by Outfit leaders to decide where to strike the next night.

When this idea came to me, I asked my friends Bob Mitchell and Rich Sjoberg if it were possible. Together, they made my dream into a reality, and game a taste of what could be done with game-to-web integration.
